Gum Treatment

Our Periodontal (gum) treatments are aimed at retaining your teeth, or assisting with the provision of care from other specialties.

Periodontal diseases are incurable, however control of the disease and repair of its effects are achievable.

Initially, treatments are based upon thorough professional cleaning of the teeth and advice on essential home care techniques. This can be performed by either the periodontist or the dental hygienist.

Oral hygiene advice is a particularly important part of the gum treatment, and patients are expected to carry out regular and diligent home care, without which the treatment will fail.

Following gum treatment, a period of reassessment is necessary, after which patients will either enter a long term programme of supportive care with the hygienist team, or be offered a second phase of surgical treatment for further disease control.

What can Periodontal surgery do for me?

Periodontal treatment can:

  • Re-contour the gum and bone, facilitating better cleaning
  • Re-generate bone and tooth support
  • Re-construct the soft tissue contours around areas of recession
  • Re-establish firm teeth with splinting techniques

Smokers do not respond to treatment as well as those who have never smoked, or who cease smoking as part of their treatment.

The Centre provides trained staff who can offer Smoking Cessation Therapy, relaxation and hypnotherapy to assist current smokers and those with anxiety about dental treatment.
