Periodontal diseases are incurable, however control of the disease and repair of its effects are achievable. Initially, treatments are based upon thorough professional cleaning of the teeth and advice on essential home care techniques. This can be performed by either the periodontist or the dental hygienist. Oral hygiene advice is a particularly important part of the gum treatment, and patients are expected to carry out regular and diligent home care, without which the treatment will fail. Following gum treatment, a period of reassessment is necessary, after which patients will either enter a long term programme of supportive care with the hygienist team, or be offered a second phase of surgical treatment for further disease control.
